One of the biggest hurdles of the ASEAN Economic Community will be in the area of taxation. While a common taxation policy might be a stretch, steps must be taken to at least work towards tax harmonization and avoid tax competition. But will harmonization efforts succeed? What is the status of the harmonization initiatives, if any? What are the possible strategies that can be considered to hasten the process?

Prominent speakers that included Mr. Jayant Menon, Lead Economist (Trade and Regional Cooperation) of the Asian Development Bank discussed the status of tax harmonization efforts in the region; Ms. Roselle Caraig, Tax Partner of Isla Lipana & Co. (PWC) presented the impact of ASEAN integration in the national landscape; and Atty. Anthony Abad, founding Partner of Abad, Alcantara and Acero also discussed another interesting cross-border topic, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
